Relationships between Soil Conditions and Earthquake Ground Motions in Mexico City in the Earthquake of September 19, 1985

One of the most dramatic aspects of the earthquake effects in Mexico City in the earthquake of September 19, 1985 was the enormous differences in intensities of shaking and associated building damage in different parts of the city. It is the purpose of the report to describe the soil conditions in Mexico City, present the results of special studies made since the earthquake to explore in detail the soil conditions at the sites of strong-motion recording stations and at other sites of interest in and near the city, and to present the results of some analytical studies of the extent to which the observed differences in shaking intensities can be predicted using simple analyses of ground response incorporating measured properties of the shear wave velocities of the soils.
