Experimental Observation of Laser-Driven Shock Waves in Aluminum Foils

In the experiments on aluminum foil irradiated by a Nd: glass laser at intensity about 1.5 10(14) w/cm sq, the shockheating luminosity at the back surface of the foil has been recorded by a fast optical streak camera. From these records, the shock velocity in the target foil has been estimated to be about 16.5 mm/micro s, corresponding to a pressure of about 3.7 Mbar. Comparing with one-dimensional hydrocode simulation, this measured pressure is lower. The authors attributed it to some two-dimensional effects, and discussed briefly.
