Gasreducerande Atgaerder i Svinstallar (Gas Reducing Measures in Pig Houses)

A large number of gases are produced from the manure in animal houses. The concentration and the insanitariness are unknown for most of these gases. One gas which occurs in relatively high concentrations in all types of animal houses independently on the type of manuring system is ammonia. The concentration of this gas will therefore give an indication (tracer gas) of the emission of gases from the manure to the air in animal houses. One exception will be the occurrence of hydrogen sulphide which mainly is released when the manure is agitated. The objective of the investigation has been to examine how different factors affect the concentration of ammonia in swine houses. The investigation has shown that the concentration of ammonia can vary within wide limits in swine houses.
