摘要

In 1989, the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Disease, NIH conducted a mail survey with telephone follow-up of 3,481 primary care physicians in active practice in the continental United States. A stratified probability sample was selected using the files of the American Medical Association (AMA) and American Osteopathic Association (AOA). Four specialties were selected to be included in the study: Family physician (FP), general practitioner (GP), internist (IM), and pediatrician (PD). Two versions of a questionnaire were constructed: one for pediatricians containing questions about insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus only and one for the other three specialities containing questions about both insulin-dependent and non-insulin dependent diabetes. Physicians who were not actively engaged in practice or did not see patients with diabetes were excluded. The purpose of the survey was to assess practice behaviors, treatment goals and beliefs related to management of diabetes mellitus and prevention of its complications among a representative sample of primary care physicians in the United States.
