Influence of the Shell Closure on the Microscopic Structure of Even-Even Hg Isotopes: A Study with Electron and Muon Beams

The thesis presents the final electron-scattering data for (204)Hg together with the muonic X-ray results for the even-even isotopes. From the charge radii extracted from the muonic transition energies, the corresponding isotope shifts of the even-even Hg isotopes are discussed, as well as the reduced transition probabilities and quadrupole moments deduced from the description of the hyperfine interactions. The ground-state charge distribution of (204)Hg, resulting from a combined analysis of the muonic X-ray and electron-scattering data, is described in terms of spherical Hartree-Fock calculations. Using the accurate ground-state charge distribution of (206)Pb given by Frois et al., the charge-density difference between (206)Pb and (204)Hg was derived. An extensive investigation of this quantity to extract information on the difference in triplet s(1/2) proton occupation number is presented. Finally, the excited states of (204)Hg are compared with the weak-coupling calculations of McGrory and two extensive shell-model calculations.
