Novel Fluorinated Acids for Phosphoric Acid Fuel Cells. Annual Report April 1987-March 1988

A program for the synthesis of strong acids of the type (RfSO2)2NH and (R (sub f)SO2)2CH2 was continued and extended to polyfunctional derivatives. A series of difunctional carbon acids was prepared and intermediates in reactions were isolated and characterized. Several new compounds were prepared. Structural characterization of these novel carbon and nitrogen acids was pursued by x-ray diffraction providing clear evidence for the extensive charge delocalization from nitrogen and carbon onto the sulfonyl oxygens. This feature is clearly responsible for the remarkable acidity of these compounds wherein the ionization of the proton leads to a highly stabilized anion. Five crystal structures were determined.
