Reappraisal of Categorization Criteria for Venting Gas Appliances. Topical Report, June 1987-December 1989.

The introduction of higher efficiency gas appliances resulted in the need for venting the products of combustion with non-traditional hardware. Recognizing this, industry standards groups adopted methods of categorizing gas appliances with respect to their generic venting requirements. This categorization method splits appliances into four categories on the basis of flue gas temperature and composition and the static pressure produced in a test vent. Category I includes traditional, draft hood-equipped appliances while the other categories need new vent sizing methods. After several years of field experience, research has shown that the categorization criteria need to be modified. Recommendations are presented for alterations to both the test vent and the performance criteria. The new categorization procedure is designed to be fully complementary with new vent sizing and design criteria being developed concurrently.
