摘要

In thousands of communities across North America, former gas stations, auto repair shops, and other sites contaminated with oil and gas threaten the environment, potentially harm human health, blight neighborhoods, and block economic development. These sites, known as petroleum brownfields, are often abandoned because the process of assessment, cleanup, and redevelopment can be expensive, time-consuming, and legally complicated. However, when these barriers are addressed, petroleum brownfield sites can serve as catalysts for the revitalization of the surrounding neighborhoods. The brownfield assessment and clean-up process can be used to start a broader conversation about community needs and opportunities that allows residents to work together to attract public and private investments and achieve their vision for their community.
