Water quality research on reservoirs focuses on the assessment of water qualityand the effects on the functions of a reservoir and its downstream river. The functions may comprise socio-economical functions as well as ecological functions. Remedial measures are studied in case of poor water quality. Such research is often carried out within the framework of an environmental impact study, using water quality models. Two different situations may be distinguished for water quality research on reservoirs. One situation concerns the assessment of future reservoirs, in which poor water quality may arise from the decomposition of drowned vegetation. The other situation arises when the pollution from upstream sources causes unacceptable deterioration of water quality in an existing or future reservoir. The resulting water quality problems refer mainly to the dissolved oxygen budget and to the enrichment with inorganic nutrients (eutrophication). Examples of both situations studied with the water quality models WQ-ARM and STRATIF are presented in the paper.
