Role of calcium sulfate in the reduction of NOx by methane

The purpose of this study is to experimentally investigate the role of calcium sulfate, a by-product of the limestone desulfurization process, in the reduction of NOx by methane. A literature survey was conducted and found no prior evidence of NOx reduction by any sulfates, nor was NOx reduction related to the limestone desulfurization process. Experimental findings in a flow reactor at 550 deg C showed that, although NOx levels were reduced by up to 30% in a synthetic flue gas with methane levels of 2000 ppm, the presence of calcium sulfate had no impact upon NOx reduction as compared to an inert packing material. Also, the addition of sulfur dioxide had no influence on the reactions, although a sort of adsorptive behavior with calcium sulfate was observed. 15 refs, 21 figs, 1 tab
