A mathematical model of a fatigue crack propagation effect in which the application of a single high load can significantly reduce the crack propagation rate under subsequent smaller load cycles is presented. A FORTRAN program for the model is described and applied in a theoretical study of crack propagation in ultra high strength steel under two programmed load spectra. The effects of variation of several of the parameters entering into the model are investigated as well as the effects of changes in loading order. (Author)
