Wave Distribution Functions for Plasmaspheric Hiss Observed on Board Isee-1

Plasmaspheric hiss observed on the ISEE-1 satellite, near the magnetic equator, is analyzed in terms of the wave distribution function. Most of the wave energy is conveyed by waves with their normals inclined to the Earth's magnetic field at very large angles, clearly related to the Gendrin angle. Particularly in or near a region identified as the source, the wave normals are concentrated into two packets that are almost opposite in azimuth. The packets tend to converge towards the local magnetic meridian plane as the satellite moves away from the source region.
