Comparison of Capacity Oriented and Product Oriented Approaches to Goods Flow Control

The product oriented and the capacity oriented approaches to goods flow control in a multiproduct multistage make-to-stock situation are compared. No clear superiority of either approach is revealed, but the capacity oriented approach makes the relationship to higher levels of control easier. It is possible to combine capacity adjustment decisions with capacity usage decisions. The product oriented approach needs a separate (aggregate) model to make the capacity adjustment decision and it is not always easy to couple this level of decision making properly to the (detailed) product oriented approach of the goods flow control level.
