Automatic Riveting Machine for Spherically-Formed Airframe Structures

A numerically controlled riveting machine was developed and constructed in order to guarantee the competitiveness of the Airbus passenger aircraft on the world market by reducing manufacturing costs and production time. The 5(6)-axis riveting machine can rivet spherically formed shell sections due to a high degree of automation, and more economically than riveting machines available on the market. Techniques required for the automatic riveting of shell sections were developed using robots, and tested for the processes of clip setting and clip frame connection. The automatic riveting procedure also improves working conditions, especially by the elimination of the riveting noise.
