The magnetic properties of the rare-earth-metal compound Gd2Cl3 were measured. The substance properties and preparation method of Gd2Cl3 are given. The temperature dependence of the magnetic specific heat and the magnetic susceptibility were determined. The magnetic specific heat was calculated for a Heisenberg chain with spin S=7/2. The magnetic susceptibility was interpreted with a model that also permits detailed predictions concerning exchange constant. The dynamic susceptibility was measured with electron spin resonance and nuclear magnetic resonance. The results determine the effect of spin diffusion on the dynamic behavior of the spin system. Comparison of experimental results and model calculations allows the quantitative estimate of the diffusion constant. The determination of the specific heat of Y2Cl3 provides the force constants and elucidates the lattice dynamics.
