A computational procedure for the generation of grids around car configurations above a flat ground plane in two and three dimensions is presented. The procedure is based on transfinite interpolation in which interior grid points are generated from the boundary grid points by interpolation. The use of an 0-0 type of grid automatically clusters grid points in regions where high resolution is needed. Because of the existence of a ground plane very close to the body, the flow region is divided into several subregions, two in the 2D case and three in the 3D case, making it possible to obtain nearly orthogonal grids. At the grid interfaces between subregions continuity conditions on grid points, grid spacing, and grid-line orientation are imposed. Alternative mapping types are discussed and test examples illustrate the capabilities of the method.
