Special Features of Image Formation in the Scanning Optical Microscope

The image obtained in the scanning optical microscope is calculated for the case where a light probe scans across the boundary of an opaque screen. Analytical expressions are presented for the definition of the region of diffusion of the image and for the resolution of the apparatus.
