Interconnection Strategies for Tightly Coupled Multiprocessor Systems

A combined parallel/sequential data exchange method is described. For systems with a large number of processors (of the order of 1000 or 10,000) hardware requirements of the I/0-part of these processors are drafted. Low-level strategies (full-line and full-information type of connections) to connect a small number of processors are applied to high-level strategies (recursive segmentation and pipeline structures) to connect a large number of processors. Interconnection of large systems by these strategies is evaluated. For low-level interconnection, the full-information connection is better than full-line connection, for at the same cost of data exchange time it requires less external inputs and utilizes the inner cluster connection optimally. For high-level interconnection recursive segmentation is preferable to bidirectional double pipeline structures.
