A rod mechanism analogy for the description of the deformation behavior of axisymmetrically loaded spherical shells was established. A geometrically nonlinear theory for plane rods, which are circularly curved, and embedded and loaded in their plane, was derived. Instability phenomena in elastic systems are treated. A geometrically nonlinear theory for axisymmetrically loaded spherical shells was derived. The analogy between axisymmetrically loaded spherical shells and circular, elastically embedded circular arches is explained. The completeness of the analogy is demonstrated.
