How to Protect Hardened Facilities from Very High Level Transients Induced on Power Lines by Lightning or EMP

It is shown that in very severe environments due to lightning or EMP, classical protection devices with arresters may not be sufficient. Three systems are described: an insulating shaft system; a hydraulic system; and a fast circuit shorter. The first two systems are relatively independent of the specification of the threat and do not need to calculate the precise characteristics of the transients. The last device has the advantage of giving significant improvement of an existing protection.
