Design, Manufacture and Testing of an Elegant Breadboard Model Communications Processor

A communications processor to handle networking within the on-board data handling system was developed. It facilitates packet telemetry (IM) and packet telecommand (TC) for the transmission of space acquired data, from spaceborne source to a user on ground, and of data sets from a ground source to a spaceborne user in a standardized and highly automated way. The layered approach used to model the communications is proved very useful. Use of VLSI components developed elsewhere is validated, allowing miniaturization of the unit. The consistency and the efficiency of the packet TM and packet TC standard introduced is confirmed.
