A materials irradiation facility was built in order to perform experiments at five core positions of the KNK 2 reactor. Two locations were provided with openings in the reactor lid for measurement and supply lines; they are therefore suited for the accomodation of instrumented test rigs. The two locations are the central core position at which an irradiation channel was realized with the help of a special carrier fuel element, and a reflector position. For the central position an irradiation rig was developed in which eight electrically heated pressure tube specimens can be irradiated simultaneously. The test conditions such as temperature and internal pressure can be adjusted individually for each specimen in a steady state or dynamic mode. For the reflector position a test rig is available in which the specimens are irradiated in electrically heated capsules. Another test rig serves for in-pile testing of switches for reactor protection systems.
