Definition and Use of Sensors for Measuring Electrical Conductivity in Thunderclouds

The electrical behavior of a convective cloud is related to global parameters like the atmospheric electric field and to local phenomena like the electric charge of hydrometeors and the electric ionic conductivity of the medium. Different sensors were designed and installed on an aircraft. The experimental devices are described and results of the airborne experiments are presented. A positive monopole zone of ionic density was detected in clear sky at the edge of convective clouds, at 6000 m altitude.
