Architectural choices related to the design and development of a network operating system (NOS), supporting a high performance, on-board distributed data handling system (DDHS) compatible with Ada language, were studied. The DDHS is a distributed system consisting of a high bandwidth local area network, connecting a set of nodes. The nodes are microprocessors, or multimicroprocessors. Requirements for a NOS include the provision of a set of standard communication mechanisms and interfaces, for use from DDHS applications, that allow communications among the applications, and sharing of distributed resources. A set of guidelines for the design and the implementation of the kernel and system layers of the NOS was derived. Basic communication mechanisms and protocols were outlined. The detailed design of a prototype implementation of one of the communication mechanisms (remote procedure call mechanism) was completed, and the mechanism was implemented.
