Structural Investigations of Some Metallic Glasses

The reduced radial distribution functions (rRDF) of metallic glasses were determined by neutron diffraction. The isotopic substitution method was used to determine partial rRDF's for the ternary glass Fe40Ni40B20', thus gaining a more detailed picture of the structure. In order to better interpret the rRDF's, the disordered crystal model was studied. The para-para-crystal used in a comparative study for a large number of binary glasses is introduced. Mainly the partial rRDF's are considered. The experimental partial RDF's for Ni81B19 are found to be characteristic for the structure of a large variety of metallic glasses. These partial RDF's indicate a medium range order similar to the (prismatic) medium range order in the DOe-structure.
