Experiments on Liquid-Vapor Phase Change between Plane Liquid Surfaces. Part 2. Observations of Large Temperature Jumps Near the Interfaces

Experiments were carried out to measure the temperature distribution in mercury vapor confined between its liquid evaporating surface and a condensing plane surface. The data presented here clearly exhibit the large temperature jumps at the interface boundaries predicted by theory; jumps as large as almost 50 percent of the applied temperature difference have so far been observed. These results, therefore, settle one of the most controversial issues in this area.
