The Fault Recovery and Management Expert System (FRAMES) was analyzed to determine the issues involved in porting its functionality into each of the following three languages and/or shells: (1) Ada, a general-purpose programming language developed at the initiative of the US Department of Defense; (2) CLIPS, the C Language Integrated production System, and expert system shell, freely available to NASA and USAF and their contractors; and (3) G2, marketed by Gensym Corp., a tool for developing real-time intelligent monitoring and control systems. The features of each language were examined and compared to those of the current FRAMES platform (the LISP language on a Solbourne workstation). Structures for appropriate knowledge and data representation in each language were determined. The structures were compared to those which are currently employed in FRAMES. Issues including amount of programming, cost, degree of extensibility, and required degree of programming skill were addressed. The 6.x.x diagnosis rule group was ported.
