A Study of Some Factors Affecting Rolling-Contact Fatigue Life

The rolling-contact fatigue spin rig was used to evaluate the effect on rolling-contact fatigue life of the following factors: stress, forging fiber orientation, lubricant viscosity, lubricant base stock, temperature, dry-powder lubricants, metallurgical structure, and alloy composition. Ball specimens of 1/2- or 9/16-inch diameter were tested at loads producing maximum theoretical Hertz compressive stresses of 600,000 to 750,000 psi. Results showed that each factor studied had a definite effect on rolling-contact fatigue life. (Author)
