An approximate equation is derived for quenching distance based on the effect of the destruction of atoms and free radicals "by a sur¬face, on the chemical reaction, and on flame propagation. The quenching distance is expressed in terms of the diffusion coefficient for the active particles, the partial pressure of the active particles, the time between effective collisions of active particles and gas phase molecules, the efficiency of the surface as a chain breaker, the total pressure of the mixture, and a constant which depends on the geometry of the quenching surface.
