MODULATION OF THE PHOTOMULTIPLIER AMPLIFICATION FACTOR IN THE MEASUREMENT OF WEAK LIGHT FLUXES

A method is proposed for modulating the photomultiplier amplification factor as based on disturbing the distribution of interstage potentials and thus precluding the zero in stability involved in leakages on the photomultiplier glass. The modulation is achieved by shorting two adjacent dynodes by a polarized relay powered from an a-c system.nThe use of this method makes it possible, when amplifying the photocurrents, to replace the d-c amplifier (with its characteristic zero drift) by an a-c amplifier.
