In 'search' mode, GALAXY finds star images on Schmidt telescope plates at an average rate of about 10 per hour and records their positions with an accuracy of l0μ/m. The search data record (paper tape) provides the finding list which is used as input for the precise 'measurement' mode of operation;but the search mode can also be made use of directly, for example, to give the numbers and distributions of stars in Milky Way fields and in open and globular clusters, of bright stars in nearby galaxies, and of galaxies in clusters of galaxies.
