To fabricate inorganic thin film materials, such as compound semiconductors for solar cells, by electrical deposition, the behavior and crystallization process of copper ions were investigated under the microgravity. A new method was also investigated by which new functional glass powders with the true sphere shape for medical application can be fabricated under the microgravity. From the momentary change in the thickness of concentration boundary layer of copper ions during the constant-current electrical deposition using quasi-two-dimensional electrolytic cells, it was found that the natural convection was not controlled by the ground experiments. When comparing the copper crystals deposited for 2 and 8 seconds of electrical deposition periods at the current value of 0.05 A/cm(sup 2), the crystal with 2 (mu)m was deposited at 2 seconds after the dropping, and glowed into 3 (mu)m at 8 seconds after the dropping. To fabricate homogeneous semiconductor crystals by the electrical deposition process, basic data were obtained by which the fabrication condition of CdTe compounds can be determined. Fabrication of fine glass powders was investigated by evaporating, drying and solidifying under the microgravity environment using telluride glass as a raw material. Around 40 million of fine glass powders were obtained from 40 mg of raw glass material. 4 refs., 30 figs., 2 tabs.
