Soon, a new generation of scientific workbenches will be developed as a211u001ecollaborative effort among various research institutions in the US. These 211u001escientific workbenches will be accessed in the Web via portals. Reusable 211u001ecomponents are needed to build such portals for different scientific disciplines, 211u001eallowing uniform desktop access to remote resources. Such components will include 211u001etools and services enabling easy collaboration, job submission, job monitoring, 211u001ecomponent discovery, and persistent object storage. Based on experience gained 211u001efrom Grand Challenge applications for large-scale instruments, we demonstrate how 211u001eGrid infrastructure components can be used to support the implementation of 211u001escience portals. The availability of these components will simplify the prototype 211u001eimplementation of a common portal architecture.
