Using computational fluid dynamics to model a glass furnace is a difficult task211u001efor any one glass company, laboratory, or university to accomplish. The task of 211u001ebuilding a computational model of the furnace requires knowledge and experience 211u001ein modeling two dissimilar regimes (the combustion space and the liquid glass 211u001ebath), along with the skill necessary to couple these two regimes. Also, a 211u001edetailed set of experimental data is needed in order to evaluate the output of 211u001ethe code to ensure that the code is providing proper results. Since all these 211u001ediverse skills are not present in any one research institution, a consortium was 211u001eformed between Argonne National Laboratory, Purdue University, Mississippi State 211u001eUniversity, and five glass companies in order to marshal these skills into one 211u001ethree-year program. The objective of this program is to develop a fully coupled, 211u001evalidated simulation of a glass melting furnace that may be used by industry to 211u001eoptimize the performance of existing furnaces.
