AN ANEROID BOMB CALORIMETER FOR MEASURINCnTHE HEAT OF COMBUSTION OF IRRADIATED NUCLEAR GRAPHITE :PRELIMINARY EXPERIMENTS IN AN OBSERVATION BOMB
An aneroid bomb calorimeter is described in which the heat of combustion of irradiated graphite can be measured more conveniently and accurately than hitherto. An accuracy of about 1 part in 10,000 is obtainable.nPreliminary investigations were carried out in a specially designed observation bomb to determine the best techniques to be used when burning graphite in the aneroid calorimeter. The construction of this bomb, which is fitted with two windows, is described.nExperiments showed that a satisfactory determination of the amount of graphite burnt could be obtained from the difference between the original mass and the weight of combustible residue.
