EXPERIENCE IN TESTING INSTALLED FISSION PRODUCT TRAPPING PLANT WITH METHYL IODIDE

A simple experimental procedure has been developed, based on labelled methyl iodide, for the full-scale in-site testing of the charcoal bed of an installed fission product trapping plant. A decontamination factor of 1000 is easily measurable for a lO,OOO ft3/min. plant with a few mc Iodine-131.nTests carried out to date on several plants indicate the need for such tests since the results have in some cases shown inadequate performance, which has usually been associated with mechanical leakage.
