A WIDE RANGE TIME TO PULSE HEIGHT CONVERTER USING A TRANSISTOR IN THE AVALANCHE SWITCHING MODE

A solid-state time-to-pulse-height converter is described whose output pulse height is proportional to the time between the input pulse and a reference pulse. The instrument utilizes the sweep voltage from an oscilloscope to control the output pulse amplitude. This provides a wide range of values for the maximum or full-scale time input. A deviation from linearity of less than ± 1/4 percent of the maximum output has been achieved. The unit incorporates a diode sampling gate, driven by an avalanche transistor, to achieve a sampling time of less than a nanosecond.
