The HYDRAX computer program was developed to predict the fission energy release during a potentially destructive reactivity accident in a water-moderated reactor. HYDRAX solves the space-independent reactor kinetics equations together with coupled one-dimensional fuel thermal balance and moderator thermal and hydrodynamic balance equations. Various reactivity feedback relationships in turn couple the fuel and moderator equations to the kinetics equations. A simple fuel-element-failure model approximates the effect of hot fuel particles dispersing into the moderator. A main feature of the code is the compressible hydrodynamic model of the water moderator incorporating a tabular, multiphase equation-of-state based on the 1967 ASME Steam Tables.nThis report describes the physical and mathematical models employed in HYDRAX and outlines the information necessary for the operation of the code.
