The first large seawater desalination plants, of 50 Mgd and greater capacity, may utilize multistage flash evaporators and nuclear reactor power plants. Steam generated Toy the reactor plants will be used for the production of electrical power, and will be condensed in the brine heaters of the water plants furnishing heat for evaporation of the brine. Leakage within the brine heaters will result in some degree of contamination of the product water by the turbine exhaust steam and of the boiler feed water by salt from the brine stream. This report covers a study of the available literature on the effects of such leakage, and of design criteria and operational procedures which will minimize any hazardous effects. Factors which affect the transport, attenuation, and concentration of contaminants through the plant systems are evaluated. Also considered are the effects on the leakage problem of the plant control system, operating pressure levels, and variations in power and product water loads.
