THE SITING OF NUCLEAR REACTORS AS RELATED TO URBAN HEAT SUPPLY

An analysis of siting practice in the United States and foreign countries indicates that significant steps are being taken in the direction of siting in urban areas with populations of the size and density to benefit from the economical distribution of thermal energy. The AEC approves sites on the basis that there is no undue hazard to the health and safety of the public. Since today's remote site may be tomorrow's metropolitan area, reliance is being placed on engineered safety features to prevent the release of fission products to the environment. It is expected that more operating experience with commercial nuclear power stations will further the trend toward greater reliance on engineered safety features and less on distance from population centers.
