摘要

The results of a 6-month study of some of the health manpower characteristics and requirements in Ohio are presented. The study involved a background review of the relevant literature on health manpower, the development of a useful data base, and field trips to representative portions of the State. It is estimated that by 1980, 1,573 physicians can be expected to be lost from the work force; therefore, to keep up with the population growth, a total of 4,128 new physicians will have to be recruited for practice. An estimated 5,077 replacements will be produced from Ohio's medical schools, but only 50 percent of these can be expected to remain in the State. Thus, a major emphasis is placed on the quality and attractiveness of graduate medical education programs. It is recommended that the State establish a District Health Education Program and provide basic funding for the 12 district organizations operating health education programs; that an Office of Vice-Chancellor for Health Affairs be created; and that the State maintain a health manpower information system. A review of health manpower considerations is presented, along with physician demography in Ohio. Appendices provide information on manpower characteristics, methodology, and the proposed budget for the Ohio District Health Education Program. Also included is a report on area health education centers and regionalization of academic medicine. Portions of this document are not fully legible.
