Flow characteristics have been investigated in a box plenum chamber associated with an air-cooled heat exchanger using a smoke injection technique to visualise the flow, X-wire hot wire anemometers to determine local velocities and modified Kiel probes to measure total head distributions both within the plenum and the fan ring.nThe results indicate that a central core of rotating air exists with recirculating flows at the sides of the plenum. For the tests reasonable agreement is achieved between the results and values predicted from the manufacturer's fan performance curves.
