Acoustic Emission Testing Program:Progress Report on Tensile Testing Through October 1970

Development of an acoustic emission testing program was initiated to broaden the nondestructive testing capability of the Laboratory. Acoustic emission is created in materials as they undergo stress relief mechanisms and may be detected by high gain electronic amplification equipment. A program of conducting tensile tests on various materials while monitoring with acoustic emission equipment was undertaken. This furnished background information which would be useful for predicting and evaluating acoustic emission behavior of structures more complicated than tensile samples.
