摘要

Due to the lanthe.nide contraction, the size of the rare earth ion decreases with increasing atomic number. This results in an increasing surface charge density for the ion and leads to an increase in the net number of bound waters. The increasing hydration gives rise to a decreasing isomolal conductance across the rare earth series. This interpreta¬tion is consistent with rare earth perchlorate data to 2.4 molal and rare earth chloride data to saturation. Ion-pair complexation has reduced the conductances of the rare earth chlorides below that of the corresponding perchlorates by 0.15 molal.
