A remote sensing correlation spectrometer was used to monitor SO2 and NO2 emissions from an experimental coal combustor capable of burning 500 pounds of coal per hour. Remote measurement of S02 was based on its absorption of ultraviolet radiation;the consistency of measurements varied over the several days of monitoring. N02 was measured on the basis of its absorption in the visible spectrum. No N02 was detected in the stack gases. Results are compared with direct monitoring instruments sampling the stack and with stoichiometric calculations.
