The most common examp1e of the utilization of direct contact heat transfer is evaporative cooling. Water desalination utilizing direct contact freezing has been proposed and studied (1, 2), and experimenta1 pilot plants have been built (3). Recently, utilization of geothermal energy by using a direct contact heat exchanger in a secondary fluid power cycle has been proposed (4). It is the latter application of direct contact heat transfer which stimulated the research presented in this thesis
