Measurement of Residual Stresses by the Hole-Drilling Method.

The hole-drilling technique for measuring residual stresses is described. Recommendations for the gathering and reduction of data include some improvements in procedures in order to correct for variations in hole diameter and differences in the elastic constants of the material being tested compared to the established calibration constants relating measured strains to residual stresses. An analytical discussion concerning the two-dimensional elastic solution to the problem of a hole disturbing a uniform state of stress is used to help explain the theory upon which the hole-drilling technique is based,and a similar analysis is used to evaluate the magnitude of error introduced by local plasticity around the hole.
