The Schottky-like anomaly observed in Lu-H alloys con¬taining 0.035 to ~ 2.0 at. % H is due to H tunneling between various configurations of "H - other interstitial" (N, O and pos¬sibly C) pairs formed in Lu. As the H content increases beyond 2.0 at.%, the formation of di-hydrogen - other interstitial groups is thought to prevent tunneling.nIn this paper we have attempted to explain one of the anomalies observed in the low temperature heat capacities of Lu-H alloys. Clearly additional experimental work needs to be done to confirm the proposed model, but this model suggests some of the avenues which must be checked. These would include doping with one i interstitial atom, while holding the other two at the same limiting value of the stock Lu metal and then adding H.
