A Review of Head Start Research Since 1969 and an Annotated Bibliography

This combined literature review and annotated bibliography identifies pertinent concerns of the Head Start program. The findings of studies conducted to determine the impact of Head Start participation on the physical health, cognitive and social development of the child, the family, and the community are presented. A total of 59 research reports were identified that contained findings related to these impact issues. It is demonstrated that Head Start produces gains in intelligence, in academic achievement, and in cognitive development; that it has a positive impact on social behavior, child socialization, child health, and parental attitudes toward their children; that it produces changes in parent behavior; and that it influences changes in community institutions and increases community involvement. The annotated bibliography contains 762 references from journal articles, books, newspapers, dissertations, and project reports which focus on Head Start. An index includes the following subject areas: basic research studies, child and family resource programs, cognitive achievement, community impact, cost analysis, data analysis, descriptive studies, editorials and comment, evaluation studies, health, Home Start, legislation, longitudinal studies, mental health services, parent child centers, parent participation, planned variation, social / emotional effects, sponsorship, staff training, teaching techniques, and test collection or analysis.
