The paper describes typical design deficiencies, and the resulting failures. Stress analysis methods appropriate for FRP vessels and tanks are discussed, emphasizing areas of high local stress such as agitator supports, ring and lug supports, nozzles, hold-down lugs, and head-shell junctions. The paper also recom¬mends design criteria, for both filament wound and contact molded construction.nFabrication techniques are not standardized so that there is large variability in mechanical properties of the laminates in equipment. The paper reports results of recent experiments directed toward development of a non-destructive acoustic emission test for FRP.
